Okay, since nobody posted up this yet, I figured I would. I just read that in 19 days, SOPA will get voted on. As I see it, it will kill the internet, or at the very least mutilate it like no tomorrow.

From the moment it crawled out of the inky abyss that spawned it, it has been nothing but a confusing mess. Even the people that support (including some unlikely allies, which are linked below) it probably don't know how it works, but they'll sign it anyway, probably cause they'll get something out of it.

In my opinion, this is nothing more than a futile attempt to censor the internet, and time & time again since it's inception, the internet cannot be censored. Even if SOPA did managed to get signed (God help us all if it happens), there are ways to get around it. In short, SOPA is nothing more than a weak attempt by the government to assert it's authority over something that it can't control.

So, movers and shakers of these fine forums, what do you think of all this? Is it good and has the ability to stop piracy and other illegal online activities, or will it do more damage than people think?

update to ookami's post:

if it means no FREE porn i'm against it

X3

but seriosly, this is shit, the whole point of the internet is the free and (mostly) unregulated exhange of information... this (for the most part) defeats the whole purpose :/

Yeah I've read a lot about it and watched a couple videos. The people who are voting for it even said that they "don't know how the internet works" and that scares the hell out of me. The bill is "supposed" to be an attempt to stop piracy but really because of the broad wording and the overall bad way its written all it will really do is give them the power to attempt to censor the internet. The way they would block websites can easily be gotten around by just connecting to the IP of the site directly instead of linking normally to the site but this would also cause huge security issues that would make the internet as a whole easier to attack and less stable.

Long story short, I hope this shit doesn't pass and I hope everyone who's against it goes and signs any and all petitions that they can find to try and help keep this shit from passing.

It's not completely destroyed, but it's definitely weakened. Keep up the fight!
